Remarks & Notes |
The hiss of cutting torches fills the air as scrappers cut the remains of a former SAR steam locomotive at the site of an open-air railroad museum near Krugersdorp, South Africa. The locomotive was one of 27 engines under the care of the South African National Rail and Steam Museum. Scrap metal thieves hunting for brass and bearings cut through all the frames of the unguarded locomotives to remove the axle boxes, damaging them beyond repair. The museum then decided to scrap the hulks and to plough the proceeds back into protection for its other steam locomotives kept at nearby sites. |
