A Valentine's Day Treat. NJ caboose was a regular on the old SC-4 local between Saratoga and Corinth. SC-4 was the last vestige of freight operations on the old Adirondack Branch . Though the scene has changed over the years, the new Saratoga & North Creek Railway is once again operating lightning-striped locomotives through the Adirondacks. But D&H scenes like this one are increasingly rare. The Fort Edward locals now operate with one engine, rather than two. Friendly visits to yards such as Saratoga are no longer tolerated, making this spot off-limits to photographers. It is worth noting that this version of No. 7312's paint job was applied during a rebuild by M-K in Mountain Top, Pa., before the CP takeover. Canadian Pacific has since rebuilt and repainted the unit in D&H lightning stripes; CP maintains it as a heritage unit. Sister No. 7303, to the rear of No. 7312, had already been repainted into a D&H scheme by CP in Calgary several years prior to this photo. Thus, in 2011, the three lightning-striped units remaining on the D&H — Nos. 7303, 7304, and 7312 — were painted that way by CP, all in Calgary.
