Remarks & Notes |
Climbing out of the Tehachapi foothills and into the Caliente Creek narrows BNSF's eastbound Q STOCHI works through the tunnel 1/2 (half) cut on its ascent to Caliente. Southern Pacific's original 1874 right of way through the narrows between Ilmon and Caliente was washed away by a swelled Caliente Creek in 1885, during the reconstruction it became necessary to bore a tunnel to bring the right of way up and away from the creek. With tunnels 1 through 17 already established on the hill the new tunnel became tunnel 1/2 (half). Ironically flood damage which forced the creation of tunnel 1/2 also led to its demise. After suffering again from major flood damage in 1983 Southern Pacific elected to link the sidings of Caliente with Ilmon, creating a stretch of double track. During the reconstruction and double tracking through the narrows tunnel 1/2 was daylighted, leaving only the deep cut in the earth where it once stood. |
