Remarks & Notes |
Weaving through the golden Cuesta Hills three big road motors contend with gravity as they lift the westbound 'oil cans' up Cuesta grade on California's Central Coast. Cuesta has always been the major obstacle to railroading on the former Southern Pacific Coast Line. During the steam era helper locomotives were added to westbounds at San Luis Obispo for the climb over Cuesta to Santa Margarita. Today Union Pacific still maintains helpers in San Luis Obispo, although their services are not required daily the helpers on occasion are called to ensure trains can make the climb out of the San Luis Obispo Valley. |
