NEC Anachronism
The Portal Bridge is an anachronism on the Northeast Corridor, and it seems even more so with an Acela consist passing through it. This bridge has been in service for nearly 106 years as of the time of this photo. It was placed in service by the Pennsylvania Railroad in November 1910 and was expected to have a hundred-year lifespan. Portal handles a high volume of Amtrak and NJ Transit traffic each day and is considered to be the busiest railroad bridge in the Western Hemisphere. This double track swing bridge is also a "weak link" and choke point on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, as it is subject to failures which cause cascading delays to rail traffic. Portal is scheduled to be replaced in the near future. |
