Midnight Blue In The Snow. On Saturday, February 25, 2023, Amtrak 100 (P42DC, 50th Anniversary, Midnight Blue) led Amtrak Train 54 (Vermonter). The train is seen passing over the Deerfield River on the Cheapside Railroad Bridge in Deerfield, Massachusetts as it heads toward St. Albans, VT. This bridge was built by the Phoenix Bridge Company of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania 1912 and has been operated at various times by the Boston & Maine Railroad and Pan Am Railways. Amtrak states that the Midnight Blue of AMTK 100 represents "...(a) one-of-a-kind paint scheme celebrating the dedication and commitment of our employees moving people around the clock and across the nation" and provides a stark contrast to the winter weather.
The successor to the Montrealer, the Vermonter runs between St. Albans, Vt., and Washington, DC. Much of the northern part of the route runs along the Connecticut and White Rivers.
Once treated like a backwater with decrepit locomotives, cars and track, Massachusetts has become a star in the Amtrak constellation with electrification to Boston, service to Maine and an upgraded Connecticut Valley line.
