The Race Is On. MNR Train 8713 (MNCW 4320 leading) and Amtrak Train 69 (Adirondack, P32AC-DM AMTK 707 leading) were neck and neck as they approached the platform at the Riverdale Station in the Bronx, New York, with a little extra something added to the scene with the snow. While most were still slumbering at 0420 local time on Saturday, December 21, 2024 when it "officially" turned from autumn to winter, snow was already falling in the New York City area. Since it looked the temperatures would not keep it around for long, the correct move was to head out early to catch a few shots of Amtrak and MTA Metro-North Railroad. As the area is now well into the "stick season" of trees, the snow really does help dress the scene.
With three lines radiating north out of Grand Central Terminal plus service to Port Jervis on the former Erie, Metro North covers a wide swatch of New York's northern suburbs with varying terrains.
