You think you've seen all of the subway artifacts in NYC? Not unless you've been to The Met! Hector Guimard (1867-1942) created this c1900 "Entrance Gate to Paris Subway (Métropolitan)" made of painted cast iron, glazed lava, and glass. Guimard crafted in Art Nouveau style, "....with his vision for gates shaped like sinuous tropical flowers. Slender, curvilinear components evoke vines and tendrils, which seem to grow up and out of the two anchoring stems to hold the Métro sign and help position the illuminating floral lights." In 1958, it was donated by the Régie Autonome des Transports (RATP), and today lives in the Sculpture Garden.
