Just released from the San Bernardino Shops are two locomotives wearing fresh paint: Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway SD45 5307 (ex-ATSF 5508, originally ATSF 1808) and SD40 5005 (ex-ATSF 1705). These were sitting next to the mainline and then added to this eastbound, which had arrived from Los Angeles led by ATSF GP35 3403 (with GP35 3350, two GP30s and another GP35). Once the fresh crew is aboard, this train will conquer Cajon Pass, cross the Mojave Desert and then travel through Arizona and New Mexico and beyond as it makes its way east. The yard tower behind the train was demolished sometime after this photo, and the Mount Vernon Avenue overpass, which provided a vantage point from which innumerable photos of trains were photographed, was demolished in the 2020s to be rebuilt over several years into a new structure.
