An interesting find at the Rock Island yard in Amarillo was Western Maryland GP9 29, on lease to the Rock Island at this time.
The Western Maryland's Hagerstown MD shops began chopping the noses on the railroad's high-hood GP7s and GP9s in February 1962. WM GP9 25, the first modified GP, featured a two-piece windshield, while the remainder of these modified GPs had, as seen here, a single-piece windshield. All of these kept their numberboards in the nose, rather than above the windshield as on low-hood GPs constructed by EMD later in production. With the February 1971 completion of WM GP7 23, this program was completed. (Amarillo, Texas – March 4, 1973)
