Not very many Alco C636's were built, but the Illinois Central purchased six of these units with the intention of hauling coal trains. Unfortunately, even though they were the most powerful six axle locomotive of the time and the heaviest, they had reliability issues. They were hard on the track and not many railroads could accommodate them. But it looks like the IC got some pretty good use out of them as they do look pretty worn here. |
