The odd-looking cab on ILS 1389 is the result of its original owner, Kennecot Copper, ordering the locomotive with an extra-height cab (and nose) for copper mining service. The extended height allowed the engineer to see over the top of the loaded cars he was pushing around the open pit mine at Copperton, UT. When the class was returned to the leasor, the cabs were cut down, and the many units were placed with other railroads, with Soo Line and Union Pacific operating examples. The type also had shallower fuel tanks, which is difficult to discern here, to minimize the chance of puncture by tackside boulers littering the pit.
