Is there a reason the nose is painted green?

The green is to reduce the glare and there probably is sand in the paint to help.

I'm not sure but it looks like some type of tarp. I have photographed it once before and don't believe it was on at that time

In addition to Marty's comment, the nose is painted green because the UP painted the top nose of their covered wagons with non-reflective green paint - standard scheme. Nice post Roger
