Question; can anybody tell me the purpose of the angle metal slabs ahead of the red metal flags on the caboose. Were they there to prevent the conductors glasses or hats from blowing off in the wind or a green bathroom vent.? Cheers. Good shot Jack .

Maybe they help prevent those red reflectors from being blown off at those excessive speeds and the severe winds that are so common in the Midwest and stormy winter weather. Its pretty rugged out there in the middle of nowhere in a serious artic blast. A Caboose is a welcome sight on a train these days. Rare indeed. Could you imagine in the middle of a snow storm cooking some bacon n eggs and fresh coffee while rolling on down the track taking care of train conductor duties then the train breaks in half and you got to get to it and reconnect it. Railroading, its a tough business in a rough environment.
