They removed a few of these back in the 80s, I believe. But, they found that they were so well built that they were hard to remove. They realized that it would take weeks, at least, to remove them all, idling the railroad for days on end, or night on end. Doing it at night wasn't practical since that line runs through residential neighborhoods. They decided to have engineers check them, and only removed the few that weren't in great shape, and ones that were next to roads. They're expected to last decades longer they were so well built.
