The high speed tracking (no pun intended) of these GE 6-axle passenger locomotives was suspected as the issue that caused a derailment of the Santa Fe's Grand Canyon Limited on February 9, 1969 on Edlestein Hill in Illinois, following multiple tests of the units at speed in the wake of the derailment, so these had been reassigned to freight service before the birth of Amtrak in 1971.
